Living History – The Trailblazers Shaping Our Time

When people hear the phrase “historical figure,” they often think of individuals whose stories have already been written in textbooks. Yet history is not confined to the past. It is unfolding around us every day through the accomplishments of artists, activists, journalists, athletes, elected officials, and cultural innovators whose contributions are shaping society in real time.
One of the most remarkable living figures today is Colman Domingo. An award-winning actor, playwright, director, producer, and activist, Domingo has become one of the most respected voices in entertainment. His portrayal of civil rights strategist Bayard Rustin in the film Rustin introduced a new generation to one of the key architects of the 1963 March on Washington. He also delivered a memorable performance in The Color Purple, helping bring another iconic Black story to modern audiences. Domingo continues to preserve history while making his own as he portrays Joe Jackson in the highly anticipated film Michael, chronicling the life of Michael Jackson. Through his work on stage and screen, Domingo demonstrates how art can educate, inspire, and preserve cultural memory.
In music, Lil Nas X has become a groundbreaking cultural figure. His record-breaking hit “Old Town Road” blurred the lines between country music, hip-hop, and pop, sparking conversations about race, genre, and inclusion within the music industry. The song’s historic success challenged traditional gatekeepers and helped open doors for artists who refuse to fit into conventional categories. His impact extends beyond music into fashion, social media, and representation.
Journalist Don Lemon has spent decades informing the public and amplifying conversations about politics, race, and social justice. His work reflects the critical role Black journalists continue to play in shaping public understanding and holding institutions accountable.
The late Luther Vandross remains one of the greatest vocalists in American music history. Known for classics such as Never Too Much, Here and Now, A House Is Not a Home, and Dance With My Father, Vandross helped define modern R&B. Before becoming a superstar, he lent his talents as a songwriter and background vocalist to artists including David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, and Chaka Khan. Decades after his passing, his influence can still be heard in the work of today’s singers, making him a historical figure whose legacy continues to grow.
Sports history changed forever when Jason Collins became the first openly gay active player in one of America’s major professional sports leagues. His courage expanded opportunities for inclusion and acceptance throughout professional athletics.
The pursuit of justice continues through legendary activist and scholar Angela Davis, whose decades of advocacy have inspired movements focused on civil rights, education, criminal justice reform, and social equality around the world.
A younger generation of artists is creating its own chapter in history. Tyler, the Creator has transformed hip-hop through innovation, entrepreneurship, and artistic independence. Khalid has connected with millions through his unique blend of R&B and pop. Ice Spice has emerged as a defining voice of contemporary hip-hop culture, while Doechii continues to gain recognition for her creativity, lyrical talent, and fearless individuality.
Closer to home, Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has made history as the first openly gay Black man elected to the San Antonio City Council. His election represents an important milestone for representation, diversity, and civic leadership in San Antonio. His service reminds us that history is often made at the local level, where decisions directly impact communities and future generations.
History is not found only in museums, documentaries, or monuments. Sometimes it is found on a movie screen, a concert stage, a basketball court, behind a news desk, or in a city council chamber. These individuals are helping shape the world we live in today.
As we look around our communities and our culture, we should remember that we are walking around and experiencing history every day. We should not take their contributions for granted.
