What about White on White Crime?

The majority of homicides in the United States are racial, and the rates of white-on-white and Black-on-Black homicides are comparable over long periods as well as in specific years. White people kill each other at a high number. In 2018, the FBI revealed that whites killed 81% of white casualties, and 89% of African American casualties were killed by Black people. These numbers are almost similar, yet the ignorant keep asking the question, "What is wrong with Black People?" Nothing is the answer. Several racist websites and blogs pump up the figures about Black people killing Black people to characterize the Black population as irresponsible and out of control. However, multiple studies have found that police kill Black people at disproportionate rates. It seems that the real problem of killings falls in the lap of the police, and this might explain why some keep singing the blues about “Black on Black” crimes, either because of ignorance, exaggerated concerns, or lies aimed at shining the light away from police use of excessive force. One must be careful when pulling information off the internet from websites that haven’t been properly sourced. The fatality rate of police killing Black people is approximately three times higher among Black victims than white victims. However, police are also shooting white people in large numbers, or 52%. A review published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2019 observed that “Black men and women are killed by police at higher rates” than white people.

According to USA Today research a few years ago, “In reality, rates of white-on-white and Black-on-Black homicides are similar and remain within ten percentage points of each other, around 80% and 90%, respectively. Likewise, rates of Black-on-white and white-on-Black homicide remain within eight percentage points of each other, at around 16% and 8%. And police kill Black people at disproportionate and much higher rates than they kill their white counterparts.” These stats remain similar today. So why do the media and others harp on “Black on Black crime? The simple answer is an attempt to justify police killings of Black people by making it look like the Black community is a community of criminals.

According to Sunny Hostin of “The View,” “Most homicides for which the race of the victim and offender are known are intraracial, meaning they involve people of the same race.”

“The fact that (homicides) are predominantly intraracial is widely and deeply accepted in criminology and police circles,” as reported in Politifact in citing Jeffrey Fagan, a Columbia School of Law professor and an expert on policing, crime, and race.

So why is the term “White on White Crime” never used in the media, but “Black on Black Crime” is hammered into the minds of millions? Racism is the best answer, as there is always the attempt to denigrate Black people in the minds of the public.

Politicians have used the perception that Black people are committing more crimes to advance their political agendas and campaigns by appealing to an uneducated political base. Donald Trump once posted a fake graphic that made the false claim that Black people killed more than 80% of white individuals in America. This false comment is but one example of racism of Trump, as credible data does not support this theory.

Stop using the term “Black on Black Crime,” for it does not tell an accurate story and is done to steer people away from the structural marginalizations of poverty. It also avoids the historical issues of racist segregation in this country, where people were herded into ghettos and then forced into survival mode. At the same time, drugs were being dumped into the ghettos and impoverished areas.

Malcolm X, in commenting about how the media exploits the Black community and others, said, “They may have the gas ovens already built before you realize that they’re hot. One of the shrewd ways that they use the press to project us in the eye or image of a criminal: they take statistics. And with the press they feed these statistics to the public, primarily the white public. Because there are some well-meaning persons in the white public as well as bad-meaning persons in the white public. And whatever the government is going to do, it always wants the public on its side, whether it’s the local government, state government, or federal government. So, they use the press to create images. And at the local level, they’ll create an image by feeding statistics to the press—through the press showing the high crime rate in the Negro (a term no longer used) community. As soon as this high crime rate is emphasized through the press, then people begin to look upon the Negro (Black) community as a community of criminals.”

The NAACP says that one year after being released from prison, almost 75% of the former inmates are still unemployed. Not having steady work builds up the possibility that an individual will return to jail again. This is true for all ethnicities and not just Black people. Using the term “Black-on-Black” to describe crimes ultimately propagandizes everyone.

Tupac Shakur once said, “The same crime element that white people are scared of, Black people are scared of….We need protection, too.”
