The spirit of fellowship, culture, and community will be on full display as the National Pan Hellenic Council of San Antonio hosts its annual BBQ Cookout on May 23rd at Pickrell Park in Schertz, Texas. Beginning at 5 p.m., members of historically African American fraternities and sororities will gather for an evening filled with food, music, networking, and celebration of Black Greek excellence. The event will feature representatives from all nine historically Black Greek letter organizations that make up the National Pan Hellenic Council, commonly known as the “Divine Nine.” These organizations include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1906; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., founded in 1908; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., both founded in 1911. Also participating are Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., founded in 1913; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1914; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., founded in 1920; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., founded in 1922; and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1963.
For generations, these organizations have played major roles in African American education, civil rights, business leadership, and community service. Their members include doctors, educators, pastors, elected officials, military leaders, entrepreneurs, and activists who continue to shape communities across the country. Events like the NPHC BBQ Cookout allow members to strengthen those bonds while also welcoming the public into the culture and traditions of Black Greek life.
The cookout promises to deliver the atmosphere many associate with classic family reunions and community gatherings. The smell of barbeque smoke filling the air, the sounds of music and laughter, and the colorful fraternity and sorority shirts and paraphernalia will create a festive environment centered around unity and pride. Guests can expect good food, fellowship, games, and opportunities to meet members from various chapters throughout San Antonio and surrounding areas.Beynd the social aspect, the gathering also reflects the deeper mission of the NPHC organizations. Collectively, the Divine Nine have long promoted scholarship, leadership, civic engagement, and service within the Black community. Many local chapters provide mentorship programs, voter registration drives, scholarships, youth outreach, and health awareness initiatives throughout the year.
The NPHC of San Antonio BBQ Cookout at Pickrell Park, located at 703 Oak Street in Schertz, is expected to attract alumni, families, students, and supporters from across South Texas. As the organizations come together under one banner, the event serves as a reminder that Black Greek life is not only about tradition and stepping performances but also about community building, leadership, and lasting brotherhood and sisterhood.
