Kickin’ It Up at the Western Gala

Every year in February, as the San Antonio Rodeo attracts people from all over, there’s another event where Black San Antonians can show their rodeo spirit. Thanks to the San Antonio (TX) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, hundreds of people gather for the annual Western Gala at Pedrotti’s North Wind Ranch.

On Feb. 17, the Western Gala attracted nearly 1,000 guests in their finest western wear and bling to raise money for student scholarships and chapter programming that helps the community. Because of its successful Western Gala fundraiser, the 63-year-old chapter has given nearly $400,000 in scholarships and other initiatives to support students.

San Antonio Links President, Angela Stokes Jolivette, said the Western Gala has become that premiere event during the rodeo season that Black San Antonians look forward to.

“Black San Antonio came out strong for this year’s Western Gala,” Jolivette said. “It’s fun to see everyone in their cowboy boots dancing and taking pictures. We had a packed house and more corporate sponsors this year than ever before, and the Co-Chairs, Dionne Roberts and Sharon Swisher, are very thankful that the community supports our event, which continues to grow each year.”

This year’s largest sponsors were Alamo Colleges District, CPS Energy, NuStar, Odell Johnson (on behalf of the memory of Pamela Smith), PNC, St. Philip’s College, VIA Metropolitan Transit, Valero Energy Corp., San Antonio Water System, and Gallien Electric and Construction, LLC.
