East Side Dance Team Brings Home Gold

By LaNell Taylor

Shining bright like the Gems they are, The Texas Gems All Star Cheer and Dance GEMini and Junior Hip Hop GEMolition Krew teams won gold and are returning home as World Champions. These young ladies recently competed in an intense two-day competition against teams nationally and internationally in Orlando, Florida. It should be noted that they were the only two teams representing San Antonio in their divisions.

Before the competition even began, it was an honor for the GEMini (ages 6 -8) and The GEMolition Krew ages (10 -14) to have been invited to compete on the big stage amongst some of the best teams globally. The competition started with 15 teams in each division. After day one of eliminations, the GEMinis were in 4th place, while The GEMolition Krew placed 3rd in their division. Not satisfied nor settling for their day one competition placements, both teams brought their A-games on day two, giving all they had and leaving it on the dance floor as family, friends, supporters, and even some spectators cheered them on.

Texas Gems is a competitive cheer and dance program based in and proudly representing the East Side of San Antonio. It offers cheer, hip-hop, praise, and pom teams. Teams are open to girls and boys ages 2-18. Different tiers are offered to accommodate all budgets. Various instructional classes include cheer, dance, tumbling, and more.

The Texas Gems All Star Cheer and Dance is led by Owner/Director Rhonda Durham-Singletary, a San Antonio native who is a gem herself with tons of accolades in her trophy case. “Coach Rhonda,” as she is affectionately called, has spent over 38 years coaching, producing and directing. Some of her titles and accomplishments include being an internationally recognized cheer and dance competition judge, a former San Antonio Spurs Silver dancer, a world-class coach, and choreographer with over 100 national championship titles and now two world champion titles, just to name a few.

Congratulations to “Coach Rhonda,” her assistant coaches, Coach Kiara Thompson, Coach Taylor Flynn, parents, and the young ladies of GEMini (Alaska Lua, Ava Green, Carly Rodriguez, Delilah Everheart, Ja’Niyah Walker, Nia Jones, Raegan Jones) and GEMolition Krew (Bailey Huddleston, Jaliyah Newton, Nylah Warner, Son’Yai Manor-Aniton, Wynter Smith, Zoë Collins) on the team’s outstanding win. Way to represent the city of San Antonio.
