2024 Could Be A Disastrous Year

Now that the New Year celebrations are over, the champagne bottles are put away, and the decorations are taken down, it is time to take a very hard look at what lies ahead of us in 2024. This could be one of the most eventful years of the 21st century. We are facing some very consequential events both nationally and internationally. On the domestic scene, we, the voters, will make choices that could challenge our form of government. It appears that former impeached President Donald Trump will win the nomination to be the Republican candidate for the Presidency. This is a man who faces four criminal indictments with over 93 felony counts and the Republicans are still willing to let him represent them. He has already announced that on his first day in office, he will act like a dictator and change the bureaucratic structure of our government that has worked for us since the country's inception.  He is a threat to our democratic form of government. Down Independence Avenue, the House of Representatives in the United States Congress is in turmoil. A few Republican representatives are determined to close down the government if they do not get their way regarding the border. Their casual and unconcerned attitude toward the millions of Americans who depend on the government for many of its services is appalling.

He has already announced that on his first day in office, he will act like a dictator and change the bureaucratic structure of our government that has worked for us since the country’s inception.

If they retain the House in this year’s election, their recalcitrant positions and a Trump presidency would be a catastrophe.

There is also the United States Senate, where 20 Democrats are up for re-election and only 11 Republicans. Two sitting Senators, Joe Manchin has announced that he will not run for office and is considering an independent run for president. Kyrsten Sinema left the Democratic Party and is now an independent. There is little doubt that Manchin’s Senate seat in West Virginia will go Republican, and Sinema may caucus with the Republicans if re-elected, giving that party control of the Senate. In that particular scenario, if the impeached Trump as President and the House and Senate are under the control of the Republicans, then our form of government will be in jeopardy.

In the international arena, we are now involved in the Middle East fiasco.  After the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea, the United States and the United Kingdom launched missiles at Houthi locations in Yemen. This, along with the continued Israeli war in the Gaza Strip and our backing of Israel with additional weapons, gets us deeper involved in that part of the world.

With all these challenging issues confronting the voters this year, which of the two parties wins control of the government after November 4 will determine just how disastrous 2024 will be for the country.
